Round Three, Week One Recap

Round Report: Round three – week one

Longmuir

After winning the toss against Elwood and electing to bat, Max and Patrick pushed the score along to 44 before the skipper departed for a well-made 33. Paddy (24) and Craig (5) both fell before the score hit 100, but the boys then steadied, with Bryce (29) and Trent (22) complimenting excellent knocks from in-form youngsters Josh (59) and Cal (50), as the scoreboard read a very imposing 8/248 when stumps was called.

Quiney

With Elwood winning the toss and batting, young tearaways Liam and Zac had the visitors hopping around Centenary with fiery spells. Putting on an absolute clinic, Liam showed the apple has fallen miles from the tree by claiming 6/51 off 18 devastating overs. Zac (1/33) and Ben (2/31) were the other wicket takers in a very even bowling display. In club legend Chris Manakis' 400th game, expect the occasion to inspire the boys to chase down 228. Liam

Thirds

Dave got the day to a great start by winning the toss and electing to bat, which foiled Elwood's plan to have a 'ring-in' gun bat wreak havoc on a lightning-fast Caulfield Park deck. But unfortunately, the boys didn't make use of their good fortune, losing three wickets fell before the score had reached 50. Enter Michael "The Badger" Papalie, and from that point the game was turned on its head. Amidst some good-natured sledging from the visitors, the Badger went about dispatching the bowling to all parts of the park (16 fours), forcing nearby picnics to be abandoned due to the threat from above (8 sixes). When the carnage was completed, the smiling assassin walked from the field with 151 next to his name and the appreciation of all that witnessed the majestic knock. As per usual, the skipper did what he does (53), while the tail wagged furiously when Brenton went berserk, battering the bowling with a quickfire 45 n.o. The star recruit was ably assisted by Dan with 19 n.o.

Fourths

For some reason, the SECA, in its wisdom, still decides to fixture senior games on 'little Hurely'. When the coin landed in favour of the hosts, the boys knew a tough afternoon was ahead of them. Wily veteran 'VB' was thrown the new pill alongside impressive youngster Josh "Mr Economy" Swann, and they, along with the other bowlers, did their best to curtail Union. Father-son combo Dave (4/57) and Josh (0/11) were impressive, while VB (2/77) also toiled hard. A score of 8/314 may seem imposing, but just remember, John Halliday's Bentleigh 'McMansion' has a bigger backyard than the 'postage stamp' they played on.

Fifths

With a one-dayer scheduled for this weekend, lower-grade regular James Bruce took the opportunity to take his lovely wife Michaela shopping for soft furnishings and wine spritzers in Port Melbourne. Chin-chin.
