Round Five Junior Recap

Juniors Wrap

Round 5

U16s HOME Vs South Melbourne LOST 4/173 Vs 2/174

Winning the toss against South Melbourne and electing to bat, Rohan and Dillon got the boys off to a great start with elegant stroke play. After striking six 4s, Rohan departed for a well-made 28. Dillon kept the scoreboard ticking over until he reached a very impressive 50, earning the plaudits of his proud teammates as he walked off Centenary retired not out. Tommy (23) and Zander (29) continued the onslaught, while Ryan finished off the team's good work with a quick-fire 18. The total of 173 is the boys' highest score of the season, which shows they're improving every week. In return, South Melbourne got off to a shaky start with Zander 'The Commander' sending down some absolute smoke - a rearing bouncer striking an opener on the glove and Charlie took a smart catch at slip. The visitors steadied from there and ended up making the runs with a few overs to spare. It was tough going for the boys as Charlie was hampered by a knee injury and Dillon was unable to field because of a hamstring complaint. However, the team is confident they will return to the winners list with a good performance away to Elsternwick this week.

U14B North AWAY Vs South Melbourne LOST 5/143 Vs 8/164

We won the toss and elected to bat with bad weather looming. Our opening combo of Dan Stary & Aaron Swann who have consistently got us off to a great start was broken early with Dan falling before he worried the scorers with the score on 1/1. Aaron was joined at the crease by Lucas Daff and the went about cementing the innings and stabilising the ship against a decent opening bowling attack. With Daffy rolling the strike over as much as possible, Aaron proceeded to score and made a good 20 before lofting one to be taken caught & bowled in the 17th over with the score on 2/37. Sam joined Daffy at the crease and went to work upping the run rate and scoring a quick 22 before being given out LBW in the 23rd – 3/69. Unfortunately, Daffy followed him shortly after being run out. With the score on 4/69 in the 25th – things were looking a bit grim but a very good 52 run partnership between Oli DeLuca (12) & Jackson Lee (36*) in very difficult conditions – including a rain delay and restart under lights, saw our score creep up to 5/121. With the loss of Oli as our 5th wicket – Connor joined Jacko at the crease for the last 2 overs and added an impressive 17* to the score to see us finish with a respectable 5/143 after 40

Day 2 - and the weather could not have been more different. Sun shining and a light breeze replaced wind and rain – and we knew that the boys would have to bowl and field well to defend their score. The campaign started well with an early wicket to Connor (4/17 off 8) caught by Jacko with the score 1/7. Their #3 came in and proceeded to put on a well-made 50*. In the 16th Daniel Klimek (1/18 off 5) took his first thanks to a ripping catch by Aaron Fernandes at square leg 2/71. We got another before tea thanks to Aaron Swann (1/23 off 8) caught behind by Dan Stary 3/78. With the retirement of their #3 it was game on after the interval with Sam (1/28 off 5) taking the next bowled 4/119. Things got tight in the 1st over of Connors 3rd spell (32nd) when he took 2 off the first 2 balls and was on a hat trick – but it was not to be. Ned Cannington filling in for us from the U12Bs got in on the act with the next stumped by Dan 7/129, and Connor took his fourth next over. Unfortunately, they passed us in the 36th over, but they had a good crack and fell 20 runs short.

Round 6 – the last round for 2019 sees us take on Elsternwick at home. Hoping to notch up a win pre-Christmas

U14B Central AWAY Vs East Sandy WON 9/162 Vs 97

Taking on East Sandringham away and having lost the toss and been sent in to bowl, the boys were keen to show the coaches they have been listening at training, particularly with paying attention to what the batsmen is doing and then setting a plan to get them out. It was true team effort with minimal extras and strong fielding resulting in East Sandy being all out for 97 in the 26th over. Highlights were having 6 bowlers take wickets and 3 team run outs. Vice-Captain James Lee again showed everyone how excellence in the field wins matches with 4 catches and a run-out. Captain Kane Gleeson had a heavy influence on the game keeping the batsmen under pressure behind the stumps & creating chaos with the ball taking 2/5 off 2.4 overs and having a hand in 3 runouts. We finished the day on a quick 0/10 off 2 overs from Kane & Will Schink. With a small total to chase and again following the team plan, on Day 2 Jake D’Rozario put the team in a really good position with a fantastic 33 runs in a really sensible knock, with Sam Hayward contributing 18 to put us within a few runs of victory. Josh Schroder put on a handy 12, with Sam Gleeson and James Lee putting on a big bash partnership of 37 off 3 overs at the end. Whilst getting another win was great for the boys’ confidence, by far the most pleasing aspect is seeing improvement in all players, and how the boys have come together as a team!

U12B AWAY Vs Brighton 2 WON 129 Vs 122

A great contest and hard fought 7-run win against Brighton for the U12B boys, to stay undefeated and a game clear on top of the table. In the first week we started off bowling with consistent accuracy and had Brighton 7-65 at the change of innings. In reply we got off to a solid start with Wolverine Logan (8) and Monty (14) batting well in the opening pair followed by a solid partnership between JR Ramalinga (16) and Noodles (32no). We finished on 4-76 at the end of the first week.

The second week was a tight battle. Our batsmen got some good starts and kept the scoreboard turning over. Some good catching and fielding from Brighton saw us finish all out for 129. Captain Morgan anchored the innings at the end (9) while Aidos Ferwerda also batted through courageously with only one hand (7no). In reply Brighton came out swinging and started to quickly chip away at our lead. However, with our best fielding of the season and some great bowling we picked up the final few wickets to bowl Brighton out with 8 overs to spare for 122. The pick of our bowlers was Air Jordan Palermo (3-7) followed by Monty (2-7, including a cracking ball to take the last wicket), Baumy (1-5) and Richo (1-8, also taking a great diving catch).

U12C HOME Vs Brighton 3 LOST 8/139 Vs 4/146

We won the toss against Brighton 3, and captain Alasdair elected to field. Brighton came out with a very aggressive batting side, sneaking every run that they could, putting our fielders and bowlers under pressure with their well drilled batting side. They put 93 runs on the scoreboard, off their 10 batters.

During our batting innings, we lost a few key wickets early which was made tougher given we only had 8 players. We managed to get 63 off the bat, leaving us short for the second innings, with only one wicket in hand for the second day. Alasdair stepped up as captain and had a tremendous innings, with 9 4s and an overall personal score of ___. An amazing PB, ably assisted by Ryan who returned from QLD in time for the second day.

The team did exactly what we discussed by keeping their heads down, staying focused and not making silly decisions for 15 overs. Well done. Then we bowled exceptionally: the other team needed 43 runs off 10 overs - they won by __ runs but the gallant effort all round was tremendous. Next week, all guns blazing for South Melbourne.

Thanks to Avani for stepping up and helping us out. It’s a pleasure to have you on our team!

U12D3 & U12D4 HOME

The Battle of Bentleigh LOST 5/161 Vs 8/178

We really looked forward to the derby against Mark's team after spending many weeks training together. Although captain Raf lost the toss, we got our wish and bowled first anyway, with the ball moving about early. The boys were keen to put the previous week's disappointment aside and bowled brilliantly right from the start. Jack picked up 3 wickets, Christian continued his excellent form with 2/1 off 2 overs and Fraser's sharp catch in the gully showed the boys were on. SIx of the 8 dismissals were bowled, proving if you bowl straight you will be rewarded as Mark's team were all out in the 15th over for 44. Luke and Archie opened and again batted sensationally together. They were patient and respected the bowling, putting together a 53 run opening stand [Luke 18no, Archie 29no] to clinch the win. Lincoln and Raf spent quality time in the middle also, rounding off a great day for the boys. On our second week, we played a mixed team friendly which went down the wire, Kohan proving he has ice in his veins to hit the winning run off the last ball. We welcomed back Xavier from injury, having his first hit out since round 1. The spirit amongst the boys was terrific and we can see the development occurring in front of our eyes which bodes well for the second half of the season. (Thanks to Rod Rizzi for the U12D4 wrap)

Our 2 U12D squads

Rookies HOME Vs Dingley 2

Day 1 – 30/11/19 WON 3/74 Vs 6/73

Bowling first the boys took 6 wickets for the innings with one each to Leo Stafford, Archie Flegeltaub and Mitchell Dessent. Some excellent fielding resulted in 3 run outs and a classic catch by Ethan Palermo. Runs were hard to find when we batted with Ethan Palermo top scoring with 7, however we only lost 3 wickets which was good enough to see the rookies win another close contest by 1 run!

Day 2 – 7/12/19 WON 6/94 Vs 6/68

Batting first against Dingley we scored 32 runs off the bat with Lucas Ramalinga top scoring with 9. With extras and wickets taken our total of 94 was our second highest score of the season.

The boys bowled and fielded well with Leo Stafford leading the way with 2/5 off 4 overs. Jack Cannington, Ethan Palermo and Mitchell Dessent all chipped in with one wicket each. Two run outs also helped restrict Dingley to a final score of 68. The rookies now have 6 wins from 8 matches.

AGCC 16U

Round 6 - 24/11/19 BYE

Round 7 – 8/12/19 HOME Vs ANA/Bent LOST 3/103 Vs 2/124

Summer arrived as Centenary Park was bathed in sunshine and after winning the toss, WPBUCC elected to bat. Erin and Willow opened the batting and Erin (11) was the first of four batters to retire not out after facing her 20 balls. Darby (11), Daisy (26) and Annabel (11) all followed suit. When Sophie and Emily saw the remaining balls out, scoring respectively 9 and 11 not out, WPBUCC had posted a very reasonable 3/103, which would be difficult for BANABCC to chase.

After much debate at the start and 10 over point, Amy and Emily took turns as wicketkeeper and both did excellent work to keep WPBUCC in the game. Paige and Emily started the bowling very tightly and Paige was rewarded in her third over with a wicket from an excellent catch by Erin. The other wicket fell after a direct throw by Daisy to run out the batter at the bowler’s end. Willow and Matilda finished their two over restricting the opposition to single figure runs, which added pressure to BANABCC run chase. But several overthrows and balls that squeezed through the hands to go for four, was the difference and eventually BANABCC to surpass our score at the 18 over mark and finishing 2/124. Overall, this was a very good team effort and it is pleasing to see the girls gelling together as a unit. Hard luck as it was a very good performance to get so close.

AGCC 13U

Over the past two weeks the girls have faced some tough competition. Glen Waverley and Washington Park are both strong teams vying for top position on the ladder.

Round 7 - 27/11/19 HOME Vs Glen Waverley LOST 1/77 Vs 1/191

Gloris and Rachel were out this week, so our 8 girls worked hard to contain the Glen Waverley team who showed some superb batting skills. Best on the day was Sasha 1/15. Our girls batted well with Grace, Clem and Jasmine unbeaten. Our top batting performers were Anna (16), Rowen (11) and Avani (9).

Round 8 – 4/12/19 AWAY Vs Wash Pk/Carnegie LOST 6/63 Vs 2/175

Washington Park won the toss and sent us in to bat. Rachel boldly volunteered to open the batting and hit her first four ever. Jess and Avani were our best, both finishing on 15 not out and Clem and Rowen showed great promise, remaining at the crease for the maximum time. Washington Park also has a great batting line up and we found wickets hard to get. Our best was Anna 1/17, assisted by Jess with a super catch behind the stumps. Jess also completed a great runout.
