SECA season opens with Bentleigh Uniting continuing its dominance

SECA WRAP: POWERHOUSE club Bentleigh Uniting was too strong for Brighton Union in round one of the South East Cricket Association at Hurlingham Park on Sunday.

POWERHOUSE club Bentleigh Uniting was too strong for Brighton Union in round one of the South East Cricket Association at Hurlingham Park on Sunday.

Opener Tom Backman crafted 60 (9 fours, 1 six) before being run out and champion Glenn Lalor was unbeaten on 50 as Uniting rattled up 6-207 in the one day fixture, easily eclipsing Union’s 8-156.

East Sandringham made a rough start to the season when it was upset by Carnegie South in Round 1 of the South East Cricket Association.

East was restricted to 4-131, with Scott Adams the standout bowler with 2/17 off his eight overs.

Brett Gibb (28), Anton Duddy (32) and Nick Singh (37no) all got good starts but were unable to dominate the Redbacks bowlers at any stage.

The Spiders had few problems tracking down the runs, thanks mainly to a steady knock by Laurence Read (49).

Le Page Park began in style thanks mainly to all-round duo Oshan De Silva and Justin Glazier, who provided everything the Panthers needed to get the six points.

Coming together after the loss of an early wicket, the dazzling duo were quickly into stride, hitting a fine 141-run partnership in quick time.

They travelled along at better than five runs per over until De Silva edged to the Heath keeper to be out for 78. Glazier followed shortly after, run out for 58.

Kingston Heath’s fielding at this point had been less than stellar but it did manage to stifle Le Page’s progress in the later overs, pulling the score back to 7-207.

New Golfers paceman Indika Kariyawasam impressed and celebrated his debut with a hat-trick off the last three balls of the Le Page innings to finish with 4-36.

The Kingston Heath reply began positively and it was on track at the halfway point of the innings reaching 1-102 with Andrew Birt and Nuwan Shiroman scoring freely.

But Shiroman’s dismissal for 42 with the score at 2-108 slowed down the scoring rate. Birt fell for 72 at 3-156 and the balance of power quickly returned to Le Page.

De Silva (2-26) and Glazier (4-32) now did their thing with the ball to dismiss the Golfers in the last over of the day for 197, the last four wickets falling for only 12 runs.

There was another close tussle between traditional rivals Mackie and Bentleigh ANA.

The youthful Mackie batting line-up played well to post 9-179, recovering from 6-67 with Roshan Lakmal impressing with 40 and Elliott Bradley hitting a dashing 50 not out.

For ANA debutant Steve Scott took 3-20 and an accurate Brad Dolman had 2-18.

Tim Scott (27) and Bill Biggs (27) had ANA in a reasonable position but a rush of wickets had it stumbling at 6-79.

Brad Lovell and David Fulco then combined for what turned out to be a matchwinning partnership as they added 81 at a rapid rate.

When Lovell fell for 38 there was still work to be done but Fulco (39no) remained calm and got the Royals over the line. Colm Kinsella and Craig Park picked up three wickets apiece for the Machine.

Elwood rode on the back of all-rounder Adam Howard to an important win over Chelsea Heights Aspendale Gardens.

West Bentleigh (4-147) chased down Washington Park’s 5-153.

West’s Brighton Sub-District recruit Ryan Sweeney nabbed 3-27 off eight overs and Damien Casey batted through for 48 not out.
