Juniors Wrap Round 7
U16s HOME Vs Brighton Union LOST 5/118 Vs 3/119
After winning the toss and electing to bat against Brighton Union, the boys crumbled to be 5/35 in front of a healthy Centenary Park crowd, but enter Ryan Waites and Zander Elkins - the duo sending Uniting faithful into rapture. What the batsman couldn't do, these to barnstorming bowlers did in spades - and in fours and sixes! Zander had the scorers ducking for cover with a lusty blow that nearly broke one of "Julie's" windows. In the end, both lads retired on 40 not out, giving themselves something to bowl at. Chasing 118, Union were in trouble early when Nathan Barlas made a crucial breakthrough. Ollie Mulvogue also claimed a scalp, while Zander sent the stumps cartwheeling in trademark fashion, but it wasn't enough, as Union snuck home just balls remaining. A great effort from the boys, as the opposition is one of the favourites to take out this year's flag.

U14B North AWAY Vs Brighton Union LOST 5/87 Vs 4/115
Losing the toss – the boys took to the field in very windy and difficult conditions. Two early break throughs in the 4th over by Zakk Ruwodlt (2/10 off 2) – both caught – 1 to Connor and one to Sam, saw the score looking healthy at 2/15. A couple of weeks off – and no training due to conditions in week leading to game showed we were a bit rusty in the field, and some loose fielding allowed the score to progress to 42 before the fall of the 3rd in the 9th over caught by Azza off Daniel Klimek (1/7 off 2). Over the next 11 overs the opposition was able to put on 73 runs for the loss of 2 wickets – one run out to Daniel Klimek in the 18th (ably assisted at the stumps by Dan Stary) and the final wicket to Azza in the last over (1/14 off 2) caught by Aaron Fernandes. With a starting run rate of nearly 6 an over – the going was always going to be tough, especially in very windy conditions. Losing Oli DeLuca early saw the score at 1/6 at the end of the 2nd. Dan & Azza put on another 35 – but it was slow going until Azza was runout on 16 in the 13th. Dan was out shortly after on 15 which saw Sam & Connor at the crease – both put on a quick 16 & 14 respectively. Connor was replaced by younger brother Noah who batted very well for 9*. But it was not enough, and we finished 5/87.
U14B Central AWAY Vs Carnegie WON 6/100 Vs 8/96
Away against third placed Carnegie the boys were sent in to bowl against a very strong cross pitch wind. At least half the boys are beginning to show signs of understanding the importance of observing the batsmen & then bowling & fielding to a plan to get them out. Whilst our fielding was a bit rusty at times, we managed to restrict Carnegie to 8/96 at end of innings with Jake D’Rozario’s catch on the boundary & newcomer to the game Vincent’s Dimento’s first spell without bowling an extra a real highlight. Three weeks out of the nets can be a long time & our slow start had us with a task ahead at 2/16 after 7 overs. However, the time we’ve put into developing our opening batsmen & top order is starting to pay off with Arjun Mehta (32), Max Schroder (7) & Jake D’Rozario (10) putting their foot on the accelerator sensibly. At 4/58 in the 14th we still had some work to do and Kane Gleeson (15*) led by example with Josh Schroder (13) utilising the tap & run drill we’ve been working hard on at training to lead us to what seemed likely an unlikely 4 wicket victory.

U12B AWAY Vs South Melbourne WON 3/97 Vs 4/47
U12B got back on the winners list in the first weekend of cricket for 2020 with a 50-run win against South Melbourne Districts. This gets the U12B boys into finals still with a couple of games left to refine their game before then.
The boys clearly got some beach cricket in over the break and came out bowing beautifully. After our 20 overs we kept the Bloods to a miserly 47 runs. 'Air' Jordan Palermo, ‘The Force’ Luke Morgan and 'Wolverine' Matt Logan all picked up wickets. The pick of our bowlers were ‘Knuckles’ Max Matthews (1/0 off 2 overs), Lewis ‘Richo’ Richardson and Noah ‘Monty’ Montgomery (both 0/1 off 2 overs).
Impressively the boys went about knocking off the total quickly when we batted. Ned ‘Noodles’ Cannington (18) and Wolverine (13) got us quickly to within a whiff of passing the Bloods total. We kept the quick runs coming with Monty (25 no) and Knuckles (16 no) batting beautifully and Richo (10 no) finishing off with an entertaining cameo of big hitting at the end to get us to 3-97 after our 20 overs.

U12C HOME Vs Port Melbourne WON by Forfeit

U12D3 HOME Vs Carnegie 4 LOST 1/83 Vs 7/97
I was impressed with the boys all retiring bar one. A fantastic batting effort. Robbie and Will hit their first boundaries and Kohen top scored with 12 no. Dean and Charlie scored 9no
Charlie, Will n Ryan picked up a wicket, Kohen took a nice catch & Will, Charlie & Kohen got run outs.
The batting effort was terrific, and the bowlers did well but the Carnegie batters were strong and accelerated really well. The kids tried hard but struggled in the warm conditions and pushed through to bowl the other side out with some good run outs that will help their confidence for the next game.

U12D4 Away Vs Elwood Lost 4/75 Vs 5/95
First game back was against the undefeated Elwood away. We had 2 boys not available and lost the toss to bat first. We withstood the best the Elwood boys could through at us, accelerating with wickets in hand to post 5/75 off the 20 overs. Raf posted his best score of the season to equal top score with 14 while Fraser’s 14no was a mix of strength and skill. The Elwood team caught extremely well but our lads showed great grit and survival to see out the overs, which was our number 1 aim.
Christian took a wonderful caught and bowled in the first over of our bowling innings to get us off to the perfect start. From there half chances didn’t go our way, but we were still in a good position thanks to some excellent fielding including a sensational run out effected by Raf and Xavier. Elwood looked to be cruising to victory with 4 overs to go but some inspired fielding and bowling, Archie 1/6(3) saw us pick up crucial late wickets. Ultimately our total was passed in the second last over and we went down by 20 runs. Extremely proud of the way the boys collectively crafted an innings with the bat, showing fantastic team first mentality highlighted by Mitch and Jack. Our bowling was a little wayward but the fielding and fight was top class. Looking forward to bouncing back in the coming weeks.

Rookies HONE Vs Omega WON 4/120 Vs 13/40
18/1/20
Playing Omega at home the rookies won the toss and chose to bowl first.
It was an excellent performance by all of our bowlers that produced 13 wickets in the 20 overs. Leo Stafford 3/2 and Ben Dessent 3/1 were the main wicket takers. A solid display of batting saw all the boys contributing some runs, with Archie Flegeltaub top scoring with 9 while the team only lost 4 wickets. The final score of 120-40 was their biggest win of the season as these lion cubs continue to improve with 9 wins from 11 matches.
