LIONS CUBS LICKING THEIR WOUNDS AFTER BATTLE OF EAST BENTLEIGH
Round Report - Round 5
This week's report was brilliantly written by aspiring journo and Longy young gun Daniel Ewart.
Longmuir
After beating Mackie in a two-dayer in the previous game the Longy boys were confident heading into the one-day game. Winning the toss and batting, Campbell James got us off to the perfect start with a boundary off the first ball. He and Harry Zaia combined for 42 for the first wicket before Cambo was caught behind for 27. Wong soon followed, bowled for 15, leaving Shorty and Josh at the crease. The pair combined for a 124-run partnership before Shorty was eventually bowled for 76 with Josh following soon after, caught on the boundary for 52. The innings was finished off in style by Trent (25*) and Buddhika (21*) leaving us with 237 to defend. The defence didn’t start well with Mackie putting on 74 for the first wicket. Uniting managed to slow them down but couldn’t make a breakthrough with their opener making 100. When he was run out with Mackie still needing 50 to win it was game on, but the lack of wickets proved crucial as Mackie won in the final over with five wickets in hand. Dolly was the pick of the bowler with 2/26, while Malin (1/41) and Buddika (1/38) were the other wicket-takers. The Longy boys face West Bentleigh in a two-day game at Victory Park in round six.
Quiney
Losing the toss meant fielding first for the Quiney boys against Omega and they made the most of it with Thomas Bruce taking 3/19 in his first game at the level. Lockie Still (3/23) and Mick Debono (3/16) also got amongst the wickets as we bowled Omega out for a measly 139. The run chase was controlled by Patrick Franklin who returned to form with 72 not out including 10 fours and two sixes. Max Millwood (26), Gill Thorne (17) and Paul Dessent (12*) all batted well with Patty as we passed their score with 12 overs to play. A first win for the seconds that will hopefully get their season going with a home game against Kingston Heath up next.
3rds
The threes were asked to bowl first and put on an excellent performance to restrict Mordialloc to just 103 from their 38 overs. Chris Manakis showed that he’s still got what it takes at the bowling crease, taking 4/8 from his six overs. The rest of the bowlers all chipped in with a wicket each as we held the momentum heading into our innings. Ethan and a returning Fred Giuliano opened and moved the score to 26 before Fred was caught for 10. Ethan went on to make 22 before being bowled. Two more wickets fell quickly before Chris and Charlie took over. They combined for a 50-run stand to see us over the line with Chris finishing on 34* and Charlie on 25*. A first win of the year for the thirds with Keysborough Park up next at home.
4ths
The fours boasted three Swann’s as they sent Cheltenham Park in to bat away from home. Dave Bregazzi (1/42), Vinod (1/43) and Rajiv Lal (2/32) all contributed to the wickets, but it was Swanny senior Dave who led the way with 4/28 including a hat-trick right when the side needed it. Cheltenham Park finished on 222 from their 38 overs and our chase didn’t get off to the best start with Travis Jackman out for a duck. Dave Bregazzi (21) and Steve Montgomery (39) did their best to help Greg Brisbane who made an excellent 65, but it wasn’t to be. When our 38 overs were up, we were still 36 runs short of the target. CHAGs will be the next test for our boys at the home deck of Duncan Mackinnon.
5ths
Winning the toss and choosing to bat against West Bentleigh, we got off to an excellent start. Simon Carolan returned with a quickfire 50 before retiring with Simon Lucas contributing 28. Jonathan Guttman came in at four and retired with 51 runs to his name with captain Guy 27 not out at the end of 35 overs. A score of 189 was going to be tough to defend on Duncan Mackinnon but Connor Montgomery started us off perfectly. He dismissed both openers on his way to figures of 2/13, an excellent performance from the youngster. Guy Aloi (2/35), Sam Ruddy (1/41) and Kane Gleeson (1/7) all added wickets as we kept West Bentleigh to 6/179 to win by ten runs. A first win for the fifths sees them off the bottom of the ladder with a trip to Cheltenham Park next on the agenda.
