BENTLEIGH Uniting advanced to its third consecutive grand final after easing past Bentleigh ANA on Sunday in the CMCA Longmuir Shield second semi-final.
Set 184, Uniting made the runs three wickets down.
Glenn Lalor and Simon Richards took the fire out of ANA with a partnership of 111.
Former St Kilda captain Lalor was eventually dismissed for 63 and Richards continued his stellar season going on to a fine unbeaten 78. On Saturday ANA recovered from a bad position to put half a respectable total.
The rot set in early for the Royals as veteran Uniting paceman Simon Surridge nabbed the first three wickets to have ANA reeling at 3-23. When Luke Manders and Damian Britt chipped in for a wicket each the score was 5-40.
But ANA skipper Bill Biggs has been a rock all season and he set about repairing the innings. Dylan Jansz (16) looked in promising form but when he was dismissed and then another quick wicket fell ANA was 7-75 and in desperate trouble.
Enter Matthew Lloyd, who combined with Biggs to play positively and sensibly. As the partnership blossomed both played some attractive shots and quickly doubled the score.
Lloyd was starting to take the upper hand as the partnership reached 103 before the duo was involved in a terrible mix-up, resulting in the former Essendon AFL champion's run out for an invaluable 55.
There were still eight overs remaining at that stage but the rest of the tail was unable to support Biggs, who played superbly, rarely looking troubled to finish with an unbeaten 77.
Surrridge was nearly as impressive, turning it on in a big game again to bag 5-29.
In the first semi-final Carnegie South swept past Elwood.
Batting first, South lost two early wickets to young Elwood paceman Dylan Foote but recovered nicely to reach 2-79.
The contest was then turned on its head as Tim "Tiger" Snape (32), Rudi Schleiger (31) and Gehan Pereira (0) were all dismissed without the addition of a run. When tea came two overs later, Elwood was right on top.
Jackson "Bomber" Bunting collected another wicket shortly after the break and Redbacks skipper John Collison (23) was run out to leave the score 8-121.
The Spiders' tail wagged a bit thanks to Carl Schleiger (21) and Glen Gallagher (21), enabling their team to reach 158. Bunting (3-34), Foote (2-27) and Bobby Chawla (3-26) all did their job with the ball and the Woods finished day one at 0-3.
On Sunday they began OK despite losing Sammy "Tetley" Tee early.
Steve Jones and Nathan Harris took the score to 45 but Jones's dismissal triggered the Beach Boys' demise.
The bottom fell out of their chase when they lost 5-15. There were dismissed for 101.
