West Bentleigh Cricket Club - A Proud History

Founded in 1932, the West Bentleigh Cricket Club (WBCC) has been a cornerstone of community cricket in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs for more than nine decades. Built on a foundation of participation, sportsmanship and volunteerism, the club has provided generations of players and families with opportunities to compete, connect and contribute to the local community.

Throughout its history, WBCC has enjoyed significant on-field success across senior and junior grades. The club's first senior premiership came in 1956/57, and a golden era followed throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including four consecutive senior A Grade premierships between 1964/65 and 1967/68. Junior cricket has also long been a strength of the club, with numerous premierships achieved across underage grades, reflecting WBCC's commitment to developing young cricketers and fostering a strong club culture. Overall, the club has celebrated more than 30 senior premierships and many junior and twilight competition titles throughout its proud history.

The club's success has been matched by the dedication of many outstanding volunteers, players and administrators whose contributions have shaped WBCC over the decades. Their legacy lives on through several prestigious club awards, including the Barry Pritchard Memorial Trophy (Club Champion), Doug Quick Memorial Trophy (Best Clubman), Mike Massey Trophy (Most Improved Player), and the Bodie McGrath Memorial Trophy (Best Junior Player).

WBCC members have also been recognised at league level, with notable honours including Mike Massey's President's Award (1985/86), Marc Reid's Captain of the Year (2006/07), Stacey Brown's Player of the Year (2006/07), Mike Massey's Scorer of the Year (2016/17), Ryan Sweeney's Captain of the Year (2017/18), Nick Hutley's Player of the Year (2018/19), and Afan Sheriff's Player of the Year (2024/25).

The strength and longevity of the club are reflected in its distinguished list of Life Members, whose service has helped build and sustain WBCC across generations. From club stalwarts such as Barry Pritchard, Alan Hendry, Alan Ward, Mike Massey, Marc Reid and many others, these individuals have left an enduring mark on the club's history and culture.

A significant new chapter begins in 2026 with the merger of West Bentleigh Cricket Club and Bentleigh Uniting Cricket Club. The merger brings together two proud community clubs with rich histories and shared values, creating an exciting future while honouring the traditions, achievements and people who have shaped WBCC since its establishment in 1932.

For more than 90 years, West Bentleigh Cricket Club has been defined not only by premiership success, but by friendship, family involvement and a commitment to community cricket. As the club enters its next era, it does so with immense pride in its past and great optimism for the future.
