Not so long ago....

Amidst the buzz and chatter, the scenic ground echoed with anticipation as Bentleigh Uniting and West Bentleigh clashed in the coveted Round 6 of the South East Cricket Association – Longmuir Shield. The atmosphere crackled with energy, and excitement was as palpable as the afternoon heat on Sat 10 and Sat 17 Dec 2016.

As the innings unfolded, the consistent crack of the ball against the willow reverberated throughout the ground. Bentleigh Uniting, infused with determination, geared up to score a compelling 223 runs. C Duke, a name now echoed in every corner, unleashed a storm on the field with a staggering score of 83 runs. Despite the wobble due to the exits of B Jansz and D Britt around the team score of 110 and 113, C Duke’s stability emerged as the beacon of hope, navigating Bentleigh Uniting’s ship through turbulent waters.

Although the top order offered a reliable contribution, the middle order dwindled, casting shadows on the scoreboard. However, C Duke’s immaculate performance, paired with H Zaia’s 33 and A Zaia’s steadfast 43, rekindled the dimming light, anchoring the score at a robust 223. The opposition bowlers, despite their valiant attempts, could only marvel at Duke’s mastery. M Reid and J MacLeod of West Bentleigh did find some success, bagging two and four wickets respectively, yet Duke’s defiance stood tall amidst the onslaught.

The storyline dramatically shifted as West Bentleigh’s turn to chase the formidable 223 came to the fore. The top order dwindled, yet a resurgence was witnessed in the middle order’s notable contributions. J MacLeod, fresh from his bowling triumph, showcased his all-round brilliance, chalking up a thrilling fifty, summing his innings to a valiant 58. B Lydster’s commendable 43 and M Reid’s 31 further bolstered the chase, narrowing the victory margin and sending waves of whispers among the Bentleigh Uniting’s ranks. Despite the sterling efforts, West Bentleigh’s endeavor fell short, wrapping up at 212.

Bentleigh Uniting’s bowling unit rose to the occasion. N Halliday and B Jansz emerged as the game-changers. With Halliday’s crucial two and Jansz’s pivotal three wickets, Bentleigh Uniting effectively stunted the blossoming partnerships of the opponents. The triumphant roar of Bentleigh Uniting echoed under the golden hue of the setting sun as they celebrated a close but well-deserved victory, clinching the game by a slim margin of 11 runs.

C Duke’s stellar performance indisputably earned the title of the match’s lynchpin, forever etching this unforgettable encounter in the annals of Bentleigh Uniting’s cricketing history.

In a memorable bout that will be recounted for seasons to come, Bentleigh Uniting’s victory was sculpted by the brilliant C Duke’s hefty 83, complemented by the Zaias’ significant contributions and crowned by Halliday and Jansz’s timely wickets, sealing a close win over West Bentleigh in the cherished Longmuir Shield Round 6.
